UPs & Downs of Nintendo Ds Repairs

The Nintendo DS is undoubtedly one of the most important consoles in the handheld gaming market, leading the way with its touch screen technology it has become synonymous with gamers young and old. By transcending the boundaries of video game stereotypes Nintendo have created a console that is accessible to all the family, and with the release of the Wii this is promoted even further.
This article however will not be singing the praises of the DS lite and original DS; on the contrary, it will highlight how fragile and susceptible the consoles are to faults. Working as an engineer for one of the UK’s top internet repair sites. I see hundreds of DS consoles come in with various faults, ranging from snapped hinges to smashed top screens. As good as the Nintendo DS is in terms of gaming, touch screen technology and voice recognition it is one of the most common console repairs I deal with everyday, possibly due to the amount of clumsy accidents the DS console goes through. (Flushed down the toilet or bitten by a dog to name but a few!) The right hinge of the Nintendo DS lite is without doubt my most common repair, the slightest drop can cause cracks in the DS frame which can lead to a chain reaction of further damage.
I find that the DS lite top screen is also problematic, similar to the Sony PSP the Nintendo DS screens are LCD and as careful as you may be are always at risk of smashing. You will know when your screen is damaged! Cracking the top screen leads to a leaking effect emerging from the original crack, the DS still plays but it’s like trying to play games with half the story missing! Working at Console Doctor I get umpteen repairs ranging from slight cracks in the LCD screen to full blown fractures that resemble a smashed pane of glass!
The amount Nintendo DS of repairs that I receive here at Console Doctor reflects the popularity of the console; although I still receive many original DS consoles the amount of lite versions is staggering. I think with the popularity of the DS lite with the younger generation of gamers keeps me busy repairing from day to day. I could not count the number of times I have received a console repair with the attached message “my kid spilled cherryade on his/her DS” or “it was dropped down the stairs”.
The Nintendo DS is a truly ground breaking console, the duel screen technology coupled with advances in touch screen capabilities puts the console on par with the both the Sony PSP, and dare I say allows it to hold its own against the Sony PS3, Nintendo Wii and Xbox 360. Granted the repairs I get to the Nintendo DS consoles are numerous this can only be expected with the amount Nintendo sold of the DS machine.
